It isn't reasonable for "a mere viewing" to do anything
other than display an image.
If you use a viewer that executes image data, or an OS
that does, you probably should think twice about the
ON/OFF switch...
Most here are photographers, though some may also have IT backgrounds.
Just Google the words malicious code and jpeg. It will open lots of eyes to
the problem and explain why I do not use binary groups.
Some of us happen to have more experience with IT than
others, and also have learned to read very critically.
Please note what I said above, and then actually *read*
the URL that you posted in a different message. Here's
the significant part, which you should notice matches
precisely what my point above was.
"a serious flaw in the widespread Microsoft Windows
operating system and software was found; code that
showed how ..."
If you are using an OS that is that insecure, why are
you even turning the machine on to start with???? Looking
at images isn't where your risk lies, it's have a computer
that uses an absolutely insecure OS. Turning it on is
dangerous. Connecting it to the Internet is asking for it.
Stray images have nothing to do with it.
I am not gong to debate you, or anyone else on Linux, v. Leopard v. Windows.
The fact is that the vast majority of us us Windows and my recommendation about use of the binary groups is certainly valid as to them.
You may do as you wish.
