Download the pictures (or copy them from a card reader) with the EOS Utility,
preserving their original names. Then in Digital Photo Professional, sort them
by shooting date/time, and rename them with the Rename Tool.

The advantage of handling it this way is that it doesn't matter what, if
anything, the original problem was.
