A friend asked for my recommendation, but I really don't know what to tell
them. He is willing to spend up to $1500 for a DSLR and after he has read
on-line reviews, etc. he is torn between the Canon EOS 40D with the 28-135
mm lens kit (~$1,450) and the Nikon D80 with the 18-135 mm lens kit
(~$1,200).

I told him that I believe they are both good quality cameras, and he'd be
happy with either one of them, but I haven't used either camera, so I can't
really help him.

I figured that I'd ask here (hoping that this would not start another
Nikon-vs-Canon war).

If you have any personal experience with either one of these cameras, and
don;t mind, please let me know what you think I should advise my friend.
The EOS 40D or the D80 ?

TIA,
Chris

I have to second Ken's advise. Tell him to find shop(s) where he can
handle them - see how they feel - etc. I would expect some retailers might
even let him take a couple of shots so he could compare what happens and
how it feels to him. My personal bias is that I do not consider canon
because of their abysmal Linux support, but that is not really germaine to
the topic.
