No, I think you missed my point entirely as well as missed the point**************
of the OP.
If the OP wants to know 10 Pics everyone "must" see, pictures from the
early and mid 1800s have very little relevance to someone just
learning to shoot. Studying the more modern masters, such as Eddie
Adams, and studying pictures that have changed the world are going to
tell you what makes a good photograph -- much more so than something
shot 150 years ago on a huge tripod using glass plates. If you look
at just two pictures, say the famous Vietnam assassination and the
Kent State Girl, you learn a LOT more about telling a story, catching
action, and framing than you'll learn any other way.
Go get all of the validly historic Civil War pictures that you want
and you'll see the world has changed since them. The rigidness alone
would make them unacceptable by todays standards. They are truly
historic and relevant, but you're not going to learn photography off
of them.
As for you missing the OP's point, he asked you to post a Top 10 list
or make relavent comments. So why don't you go do that. Yes, I know
you posted some Google searches, but (contrary to popular believe)
just because Google says it "award winning" doesn't mean it'll stand
the test of time. Besides, there's a whole garbage-in, garbage-out
thing to it. For example, if the OP took your suggestion and Googled
Georgia O'Keeffe I'm not sure he's get what he's looking for. While
shes a very well known and exceptional artist, she is normally thought
of as a PAINTER not a photographer. So much for google searches.

I was the first to post a list.

I think you meant, popular belief.
The OP's quest is to know what Individuals think are import photographs,
Interpret that how you like. My list is of photographs that have inspired
me, many of which have stood the test of time. The fact that I used Google
to find them so that I could post a link, is irrelevant.
I see no date or time limitations put on the OP's question so, that argument
is also mute.
I will remind you of the original post,
"I am also curious to see if there really is a common core of
important historical/cultural/artistic images that the photography
community could agree on.", said the OP.
Note the word HISTORICAL.
Reading shall set you free.
The rigidness alone

I think you meant, YOUR STANDARDS. BTW It's today's not todays.
So, we should throw out every Civil war photo? How about the photos of the
Hindenburg? If not to students then to who are these images more important?
If you look

You keep contradicting yourself. Where do you draw the line between was is
historical and what is contemporary? did it have to happen in your lifetime?
Photography is many things to many people on an individual level, most
importantly it is a visual recording of history. To teach young minds how a
single photo can move humanity or change history's course is to teach them
the power of photography.
I invite you to seek out and watch PBS's "American Photography, A century of
images". And perhaps then you will understand where I am coming from.
Here is another GOOGLE link for you.

Also, it helps to check your facts before making definitive statements.
