Re: resolution for web sites

This is not a straightforward thing to answer. The factors to consider are:
1. how people will view the website
2. their speed of connection
3. issues of protecting your images
4. design

1. What others have been saying is true that the majority of people on the web are now using screens of 1024 x 768 or larger. However many still prefer a smaller web browser window so they can see other stuff onscreen at the same time, like their email program.

2. The file size of the resulting images is still a major issue. File size is a function of image resolution and degree of compression. For a photo site (which I presume is what we are talking about) you'll naturally want your compression to be pretty low. The general rule of thumb is that you want a page to load in 3 seconds or less. Do the math with a reasonable download speed for your target market

3. The bigger your images the more things other people can do with them.

4. Most images benefit from having some space around them. You should factor this in.

All the above currently leads me to the conclusion that images around 640 pixels wide are a good compromise between all the conflicting factors. Your take may be different. If you shoot mostly verticals you may want to go smaller.

Wayne

What size is best to resize photos to in order to display on a web site?

Is 800 x 600 about right?

I take 7mp images with the minimum compression set.

They are from the camera 3072 x 2304 which is far too big for the web.
