My camera has the option of alternating between the preview method, or using the eyepiece, in which case the preview screen doesn't work.

If you have a Dimage 5, 7, A1, A2 or A200, then it is not a SLR.
The reason is that the "eyepiece" (viewfinder) is just a tiny LCD with a magnifier to act as an eyepiece.
Notice that when you use the manual focus setting and turn the fucos ring, the viefinder image magnifies 4x; that simply isn't possible with a TTL optical reflex viewfinder that is found on a SLR camera.
