2) Is it true that if your original file is a jpg that everytime you
save it it loses image quality?
3) After I apply a filter change to an image, I notice that the
settings that I applied in that filter remain constant for other
images I open. Can I reset filters to their original settings?
certain operations have more effect than others. Rotating through 90 degrees for example has no effect on jpg quality (at least in PS anyway, cheaper software - not so sure.) Cloning a small area of the image will only cause the pixels around that area to be recompressed.
The copmression alogrithms work the same way every time you save, so if you haven't changed any pixels, there will be no image change. It works on blocks of pixels at a time, and any block with any changed pixels in it will be recompressed. Operations like levels, colour balance though affect all pixels.
Having said all that, if you use high quality jpgs, you can do a lot of work before quality becomes a problem, and if you have thousands of images, psds/tiffs may be just too big.
To reset a filter, hold alt, and the cancel button will change to reset. Don't know how to make it permanent though.
