As I recall, the last cable release had an adjustment to control just how
far the pin would come out of the end. Examine it carefully to see how this
is done with the particular cable release you have, perhaps the instruction
manual will detail this better.

Hi all,
I have a Canon AE-1 programmable. Some years ago I bought a Quantaray
40" cable release for long exposures. Though I rarely used it, it
worked fine until recently. But now, when I press down the plunger of
the cable release, I can't get the camera to fire.
I assumed the cable release was itself broken, but when I went to the
camera shop to replace it, the clerk and I tried out a new cable, with
no luck. It seems the problem is the camera, not the release.
The nitty gritty: when I press the plunger of the cable release, the
long pin that depresses the shutter comes out of its sheath just
fine...until I screw it into the shutter button. Then it doesn't work.
HOWEVER, if I depress the plunger and expose the pin, and then insert
the pin into the hole on the shutter, I can get the camera to fire at,
say, a 1/60 sec exposure. Needless to say, there's no way I can hold my
hand still for a long exposure, and the purpose of the cable release is
defeated. (Holding the pin in the hole manually would be no better than
depressing the button with my jiggly finger.)
The threads on the cable release screw and the threads inside the
shutter button look just fine. They don't seem shot.
Any advice? The camera shop guy said I'd have to spend several hundred
dollars to repair the camera, if it's repairable. But I bought the
camera for $165 and don't have that kind of dough anyhow. Any
suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated. (I don't want to have
to buy another camera for long exposures.) Thanks!
