Hi allHello. I have the Sigma macro and a friend has the Canon macro.
I am wondering if there is much of the difference in quality between
the Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro Lens and the Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro.
Both seems to be pretty good lenses, but I'm not sure if it is worth
spending the extra money on a lens for the sake of having the word
Canon printed on the lens.
Is there really much of a difference?
I intend to use the lens on a Canon film and digital SLR.
Thank you
DM
I find that the Sigma is awkward to use. To switch between manual and auto
focus you have to move both a switch and aring - and it is only too easy to
move the ring by mistake. Using the lens in auto focus with that ring set to
manual focus is not a good idea, according to the lens's manual.
My friend's Canon has just the auto/manual focus switch.
We tried both lenses on varions Canon bodies and found that the Canon focus
action was both faster and more positive.
My friend's Canon lens cost £400 from London Camera Exchange.
My Sigma lens cost £180 second-hand from Jessops.
Personally, while I like to save money, I would have bought the Canon if I
could have afforded it, because of the manual/auto focus switching design
and the speed of focus.
As far as quality of the photos are concerned, my friend and I are happy
with the results from our respective lenses.
By the way - my friend bought a second-hand Canon ML3 macro ringlight. This
is a low-powered twin-tube flash which clips on, and encircles, the front of
the lens to provide good lighting for macro-photography.
When I saw here photos I bought one for myself. They are, I find, as
important to good macro photos as the lens itself.
Regards, Ian.
