printing accurate colors

I give up. I'm going through a lot of paper and color ink on my HP
Deskjet 5150 trying to tweak the colors of prints. They aren't
photographs, but scans of old envelopes. No matter what I do in the way
of altering brightness, contrast, hue, saturation and color balance, I
can get any closer to the originals than "kinda close." I'm pretty
sure it's not the printer, because I've been very happy with
photographs I've printed with it. Although the scanned images of the
envelopes look fine on my monitor, the initial prints are invariably
too red/magenta. I can come closer using Photoshop adjustments, but
I've yet to achieve the appearance of the old, toned paper of the
envelopes. Any suggestions?
