Probably it's been left by the registry clean-up as a 'ghost' device
or in some other ill-defined state. Try following this procedure to
completely uninstall and redetect it.

I'd add that otherwise it might be (or probably is) a missing driver for
your card reader. You should be able to download it if necessary via the
site of the maker of your PC. To check go into the control panel, then
System thenHardware (I think, my machine is in French) where you'll be
shown a list of the hadware on your PC. Any that have a yellow ! or ?
need reinstalling.

The card is not shown there. But, a reboot with it in place finds it.
However an "install" process fails because it "cannot find the
software" (I presume tha means a driver --- the same thing
occurs when I try to use a USB gard drive.)
