That looks just ok, so your IE must be seriously broken. Can you
"reset" it
and clear cache as well?

I managed, after some difficulty, to uninstall IE7. I then found I'd
got IE6 on the machine in working order and used that to download
Firefox, which was no problem.to do. I'm slightly wary of trying to
reinstall IE7.

Both IE7 and IE8 seem to work OK with Vista. Wait until you install Vista or
Windows 7.
