someone by giving distant advice is always dicey, but I think I can give you
some good news. All may not be lost in terms of your files and docs on the
hard drive. If you can't get your original Windows XP back, at least you
can probably boot with one of the many live Linux cd's and copy the files to
a flash drive. Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS and Mepis are three that I have used to
read the NTFS partitions on the hard drive to retrieve data. Of course, if
your own system is bollixed, then you'll have to get a friend to download
the Linux live cd iso, burn it to cd for you and then you can boot from it.
I realize that this is not a solution to your problem, but at least it's a
way to retrieve data so that if you have to reinstall Windows you won't lose
that data in the reinstall. From what you have said, I think you are headed
for a fresh install of Windows.
If the hard drive has died, then none of this applies and your data will be
lost. HTH, JG
