Recently, I have found that every time Windows XP (home edition)
starts up, a "My Computer" window opens with a symbol of a flashlight
shining from side to side, presumably meaning it is searching for
files.

How do I stop "My Computer" from opening at startup? Many thanks...

Control Panel | Folder Options | View
'Restore previous folder windows at logon' (uncheck/disable)

If that doesn't do it, you've probably got Explorer listed as one of your
startups. If so, run MSCONFIG and disable it (startups tab).

Thanks, Maxine, but neither of the above are causing it.

JD
Could be Malware, but lets proceed.

Go back to Msconfig GENERAL tab and try some tests to see if it stops
happening.

1) tick Diagnostic Startup..
Reboot Don't expect much else to work, but if that gets rid of the pest, the
move on to #2

2) Work through the variations (add 1 tick per reboot cycle) the one that
bring the pest out is the one to explore.

BTW one of those items on the "start up" tab may be a/batch/ that CONTAINS the
problem.
The above tests should help locate where it comes in at.

Steve, Thank you for the assistance. I did what you said and rebooted
after checking each successive box. It was only after I checked "Use
original BOOT.INI" (as opposed to "use modified BOOT.INI") that "My
Computer" appeared again after the next reboot.

So the problem is in the boot.ini file, I gather. Can you advise what
I should do next? Many thanks..

JD

That is the thing I would NOT have expected :/
as being the ONLY item that affects.
Boot.ini is simple: Mine is attached and the only thing that usually causes a
change from what is Multi-(OS) boot and odd drive assignment.

BTW you can shorten the timeout, it is long to allow you to force safeboot
(F8)
-----
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
-------
I suspect that it is something on "startup" tab that was re-enabled as you
moved through the ticks.
