Is there an accessible list of updates that have been applied to a
given installation? I'm running XP Pro 64bit and a week or so ago
when I tried to restart, the close stopped with a dialog saying do not
pull the plug, Windows will stop by itself (something like that). I
have never seen anything like that before, and I fully expected some
malware had crapped in my machine.

Had you observed, the shutdown icon would have had a flag
indicating that Windows updates would be applied during
shutdown. This is normal behaviour.

You can find a list of all updates on the Microsoft or Windows
Update sites under "Review your update history".

And, another issue, if I might. Every time I fall asleep on the Shift
key (for example) the 'sticky keys' thing pops up, and once I dispatch
it I have to restart to regain control of my Gateway Anykey keyboard.
That is REALLY annoying! I'd welcome any advice anyone can offer to
ensure that sticky keys never, ever, pops up again, short of not
falling asleep on the Shift key. That one is obvious! :^)

Have you considered uninstalling the blighter?

1. Open Control Panel.
2. Select Accessibility.
3. Disable everything (merely a precaution).
4. Copy C:\Windows\INF\sysoc.inf somewhere safe to back it up.
5. Edit the original in notepad.
6. Locate the following line:

AccessOpt=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,optional.inf,hide,7

7. Remove the word "hide" (leave the commas in place).
8. Save the file.
9. Open Control Panel.
10. Select Add/Remove Programs
11. Select Add/Remove Windows Components.
12. Double-click Accessories and Utilities.
13. Clear the checkmark against Accessibility Wizard.
14. Click OK.
15. Click Next.

Done!
