Thanks for your quick response, Steve. I found the Chipset driver on thePut a Ubuntu (desktop, not Alternate) CD in the drive,
Dell website but no USB drivers. What does the Chipset driver do? Can I
undo the install through the system restore program if it causes any
problems? And how do I boot to Linux?
Thanks.

Anybody have any idea what might be wrong? I have a Dell Dimension XPSCould be failing hardware.
Gen
2 computer with Windows XP SP2 and the USB isn't working. At first a
couple
of USB devices wouldn't work then they all quit. Now the system is VERY,
VERY SLOW! It keeps saying "Found new hardware-USB", "Found new
hardware-USB root hub", and "Searching for drivers". I went into the BIOS
and disabled the USB just so I could use the computer. I've been online
but
can't find any solutions or even anyone who has the same problem.
Could be a failing hardware user who installed a bad driver.
Find your Dell (USB, Chipset) drivers (disk or a fresh download from Dell.
"Use the Service Tag Luke" :)
You may have to Un-Zip them (accept C:\dell...)
Now open the device manager (right click "My Computer", Select Manage,
Select
Device Manager.
Delete all USB root hubs, Host Controllers .
Power OFF (Shutdown, not standby or suspend)
Wait 15 seconds
Power up
when new hardware is "found" Allow me to choose / have disk are good
choices
and Indicate those Dell files
If you are NOT given the choice for new drivers when found, use the device
manager to "Update Drivers" for each device.
Reboot (Use Dell boot screen F12 to cause the CD to boot if it is not the
default boot order action)
Watch the bouncing orange bar for a bit :)
Presto, a Brown Ubuntu desktop.
(It is OK to take it for a test drive around the desktop. Fire off Firefox,
Look in "Places" and browse your XP hard drive. )
Plug in a USB storage or flash memory device.
If things work right, it should "Mount" and appear as an Icon on the desktop".
