running antivirus from usb drive

i was watching a tv prog a while ago and they had antivirus and firewall
running from a usb stick, it worked good and free,d up a lot of system
resources only problem was it was expensive.

i want to try and make one for myself anybody know what the best programs
are for achieving this.
