If "lock up" is total freeze (not even the mouse pointer moves anymore) you
have the equivalent of a kernel panic. Most of the time flakey hardware or
ram or overheating is what you have to look for.
Open the case, have a good look at the fans (cpu, northbridge, gpu) and
fingertip the temperatures.
Run memtest86 from a bootable cd or other media, for a few hours.
Temporarily remove any non-vital addon cards, usb gadgets and so on.
You may even take one of the rams out.
