The 'volume icon' won't appear in the sys tray, not a huge problem but the keyboard volume/mute won't work either (just brings up its pictorial of the existing level). I suspect the keyboard needs the control icon to behave.
All used to work, for ages; never any previous issues that I know of. I don't know how long this has been like it, whether it is an sp3 thing or something else I've added/changed over the last 2-3 months.
The icon *never* appears now, even after cold start. It is not "hidden" (tried not hiding any). It is ticked in CP sound volume properties (tried both). The 3d-audio config program has its own icon, doesn't matter if this is ticked to be displayed or not (it does show but still the other problems persist). I've tried a registry mod to change volumes X & Y back to 5 (yes they were as the web suggests up in the 300s). I have rolled back the audio drive and also reloaded from the motherboard's install cd. I've updated the m$ intellitype keyboard driver, reset to defaults etc. Been on autoupdate to see if anything was there (I remember ages ago there was once an update for my soundcard driver) there wasn't.
I think it is more likely a conflict I can't see (tried shutting down everything to see if the control comes back but no joy). I've even tried a start-up delayer but hasn't helped. Currently running avg8.0.100free (newish), winpopuplan manager (newish), zonelabs6 (ages old).
Fixable?
It sounds like you've investigated this thoroughly, so my remarks will be glib by comparison. Maybe, though, I get a lucky shot in the dark:
1) I would try uninstalling your audio drivers and utilities if the exist as a separate item in your Add/Remove Programs listing. Whack any folders or registry settings that you can specifically identify as exclusively used by those drivers and utilities.
Find the most current audio drivers from your mainboard's manufacturer. (You're talking about onboard audio, right?) Disable your virus/spyware scanners before you install the drivers. Check their operation before re enabling your scanners.
2) Boot from a linux live cd and see if audio works normally. If it doesn't, your hardware may be borked.
