I have two computers, both running winXP. I want to transfer data
files from one to another. What is the easiest, cheapest way to do
this? I will only be doing this once (I hope) so I don't need a
permanent set up. Transferring to CD's would take a lot of CD's and
time, so I rather not go that way.

I know about USB cross over cables, but when I tried to buy one, an
employee at local computer store told me it was illegal to transfer
data between computers that I own. Instead of selling me a cable, he
attempted to sell me some program for $85, which said on the box was
only for Vista. (Last time I go into that place)

I want to do this before the one computer gives up the ghost, so I'm
running out of time.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

Thanks to all who have replied and tried to help me. I made a small
error in my original post. I said USB cross over cable, I meant a
CAT 5 RJ-45 Ethernet crossover cable. The guy in the store told me
that it would have to be custom made, with I think is BS. As I
understand it, I would connect both computers with this cable and set
up a simple network configuration, then would be able to transfer data
between computers. Do I have this right? Is what I need a CAT 5 RJ-45
Ethernet crossover cable? Please let me know.

Thanks, kids.

PS:

The guy in the store is a jerk who works for a national chain, who
thinks he is an agent of the RIAA. The files I want to transfer are
owned by me and consist of gigs of mp3's of my band practicing, family
photos, .doc files and lots of other stuff I never bothered to back up
(yea, stupid).

Now may be a good time to back them up: You might buy an external HD and
ghost the system partition to it using something like Paragon Disk Manager.
Even if your old comp doesn't want to work any more after the backup; you
can always pull the files you need from the ghost image to the new comp.

What you say you understand sounds about right; but don't forget to set up a
home network having connected the two ethernet ports together with the patch
cable. You can use the Network Setup Wizard to do this. If you don't then
the two computers won't see each other despite being connected.

The guy in the store sounds like a total arsehole. I'd report the imbesile.
