Re: USB Flash Drive not recognized

G'day All

I have a USB flash drive that I use to transfer data from my work
computer to my home computer. It worked fine until yesterday. I was
able to enter the data I needed at work, it was recognized as the
correct drive letter etc. However when I connected the flash drive to
my home computer, something went wrong. I got the little sound the
machine makes when you plug it in. I have the little icon in the task
bar. However when I went to restore some data from the flash drive,
the drive letter was unrecognized.

So for shits and giggles, I changed the drive letter to Z. Made no
difference. It shows up in Device Manager as a disk drive with the
corrected (Z) drive letter. If I go to start-run, and type in Z:\, It
opens up quite nicely and shows all the correct data. I also tried 3
different USB ports on my computer. Nothing. It does not show up as a
drive in "My Computer", and when I try to export some data from it, it
is unrecognized.

I am not on a network. I'm running XP Home SP2. Plenty of RAM,(2.5
GB), Hard Drive Space, and a good CPU, an AMD Dual Core 3800+

Also, while I am here, I may as well ask another question. This is
about rebooting and logging in. I am the only user of this machine. As
I stated previously, I am not network connected. Not long ago if I had
to boot, I was logged in automatically. Now I have a problem I get the
message "Cannot log in due to account restrictions" HUH? In the
background is a login box with a grayed out "Administrator" and no
password. No password was ever set up for this machine, because I
never needed one. So I click on the little popup message, and my
account name pops up. I click it, and I'm right in. I guess I must
have changed something, but I have no idea what it could be.

Your registry settings appear to be b0rken, for your user (HKCU) as well as
for default user (before logon).
Maybe it is even the result of a security modification (some software?)
made, to disallow passwordless admin logins.
Not showing driveletters for your usb drive in explorer appears to be
another effect of (someone) playing with tweakUI or some scriptkid 0wning
your machine (possibly due to the passwordless admin account).
