my xp install is apparently hopelessly corupt. happened with
no warning and for what reason i do not know. just about every
program i try to start comes back with an error message 'the
file or directory c/windows/system/blah/blah is corrupt and
unreadbale. please run chkdsk'. Most progrmas end up woring
just the same but now i lost my internet connection. i tried
system restore but that is also corrupt, it runs but when i
click next it does nothing.
So befoe i reintall windows i waned to run chkdsk. I booted
from the install cd and went to the option for chkdsk, it
then asks me for my passowrd. i type the same password i have
been using for years as administrator and it says wrong
pasword. So i boot back to windows and try to change my pasword it says
windows cant do it. tried to delete passowrd same thing.
So does anyone know why the password which i use to log on as
administrator is not being accepted in the boot cd ?

I did run some hardware diagnostics on my hard drives and they
both passed so I am asuming this is not a hardware issue.

Thank you for the 2 replys for your info my computer is porn
less. So here is what i did I did hit blank instead of a
passowrd and it worked [figured it out all by myself] so it ran
chkdsk, it said it found errors does it automaticaly fix them ?
So I rebooted and now the constant corrupt mesages stopped, it
let me run sys restore but when it reboots is said this restore
point could not be loaded, try another ? So I tried 3 of them
none of them would work. My computer seems to be functioning
almost normal, my only problem is still no internet connection
[i am on my wireless laptop now which explain my poor typing].
I am going to try a power cycle later with my modem and router
and see if that helps if it does not I am stuck.
Any program which uses the internet says no connection and my
computer is not visible on the network, i might be screwed but
oh well at least i still got this laptop for my cyber
connection hopefully that does not go out next

ok power cycle did no good here si what i have found,
my local area connection has 'limited or no conectivity'.
It says "you might not be able to access the internet or some
network resources. this problem oocued because the network did
not assign a network
address to the computer'. when i click on network connection
details it list 6 properties with the last 3 blnk. when i click
on repair it fails.

My ethernet controller is listed with no problems in device
manager, nonetheless the only thing I could think to do was
uninstall it and reboot.
it was dected and reinstalled on reboot, samr problem.
Yes my cable is nice and secure, modem and router is fine, as I
am able to get on the internet just fine with my wireless laptop

Any ideas ?

The problem would appear to be with your router rather than your
computer, in that it is not assigning an ip address to the ethernet
port. Try rebooting, resetting and reconfiguring the router;
reconnecting even. It is apparrent that your router and the
computer can see one another by the looks of it.

PSSSST! SHHHHH! "modem and router is fine, as I am able to get on
the internet just fine with my wireless laptop".

<shrugs>

<hugs>

I was pointing out that she had already discounted what some of us
know to be the cause. My habit, borne of dealing with people who make
that kind of comment too often, is to stop there and go no further.

Just to add; having re-read the entire thread and had a think about it - You were right first time: File system corruption.
