When my Dell 4700 with XP home version started acting up I
rushed out and bought a refurbished CPU with XP Pro. Will I be
able to transfer my data to this machine. I don't have more than
beginner skills.
This may be somewhat beyond your capabilities but I'll say it anyway:
Network your new PC to your old PC by connecting with a patch lead
between the ethernet ports of the 2 computers and running the
Network Setup Wizard on each computer. Having done that run the
Files and Settings Transfer Wizard and transfer the data you require
from your old to your new computer. (If I go into full detail this
post will be 100KB +\- 20KB in size and take ages to write; so I'll
just leave you with that brief outline FWIW.)
I've done that before on a Windows 98 PC using a Ditto program on CD
and a USB cable. That required a password which I have since lost. I
do however still have the cable. Do you know if the transfer with
the USB cable will work? The wizard saya connect to a com port with a
serial cable.
When you get to the Transfer Method, click "Other" and browse for your
ethernet network. If you don't have an ethernet network set one up. If you
don't have an ethernet port fit an ethernet NIC to a PCI slot. USB transfer
setup is tricky; you need the correct drivers, such as a Thompson NDIS
Device, (They do one for XP; I'm not sure if '98?) to use USB port for this
purpose; and it's slower than ethernet.
