Win XP installed.
I made the mistake of buying an Acer laptop with XP Pro installed.
Unfirunately I didn't know they don't provide a OS CD.
Is there a way to get a legal copy ?
I have an Acer 5101 here. It comes with a 120 gig hd, paritioned as 2, 55 or so gig drives. The extra space is a recovery partition, easily visible from a knoppix live linux cd or some windows partition managers. It exists in front of the c drive.
With the older acer machine, you activate the 'restore from disk' option in cmos then press a specific key combination. The recovery software will then load the original factory image from the restore partition to the (newly formatted) c drive, leaving the d drive untouched.
Newer machines with vista have aslightly different process, but same concept.
Acer encourages you to do a complete system backup as soon as your factory defualt is set up for use. This way, you have an immediately useable backup, and a more convoluted one as well.
Most manufacturers do not provide an actual cd anymore. This process of using a hidden (or sometimes visible) partition on the hard drive is quite common.
Because you bought an oem copy of windows, you did not purchase the rights to use it on any other machine.
