Thanks for all that guys. Interesting and helpful. I did in fact change my
512 ram to 2gb short time ago. Gave some improvement but I'm convinced would
have been same with just 1gb so waisted a bit of money. BTW "Crucial" site
for memory seems excellent. ,,,,,,,,,,,,.............,,,,,,,,,,,,,

How much does it cost to add 1GB RAM to a laptop? If the laptop is old it

Hi. Like many, my Acer 3000 laptop is starting to slow with age
despite regular clean ups. What I would like to do is save all my
current data, progs etc on a storage disk, clean my drive and then
reinstall my ' installation disks ' supplied with my notebook. This
should ? give me a clean computer. Would then just like to reload all
original data to the pc.
If I did it this way would I have to reinstall all my progs or would
they automatically be loaded and ready for use etc. Would my 'slowness
' return as I am merely putting back what I have just taken off ?
Know there is software to help witth this and would appreciate advice.
Also is there a childs guide website that would answer my concerns and
perhaps offer an easy way to clean and reload.
It's not always the OS that's slowing things down. Try a good cleanup
first. Check your HD for errors. Uninstall all programs you don't
really need. Get Ccleaner, it's easy to use and safe:

Pay special attention to what this screenshot shows you (startup tab).
Windows often loads lot's of stuff on startup, you don't need, so clear
it out!

Run XP in classic mode:

When you have a faster machine, buy Acronis True Image, to image your
HD.

b.t.w. also defrag your HD.
Thankyou....................
HTH & GFIA!
I also was experiencing slowness. I added 1gig of extra memory. It runs
like a rabbit (for extra effect just pretend Keith Jackson saying
it(Monday Night Football)). Do you know how to check your current memory
status? You may be running bare minimum. It's worth a try. Re-loading
all your stuff is a pain!
Daniel Cairns
may be better to just buy a new one. If the OS is working and not broken
it is not worth it to format and reinstall ; it could be a big waste of
time.
Agreed, in generel adding Ram is a good choice. However, I bet it isn't
even possible for the OP to add 1 GB in this old machine.
