New update to my problem:

I can read and write to cd-r and dvd-r with no problems. As soon as I put in
a re-recordable (rw) I get the system crash

Are you using the 'Intel Application Accelerator' or "Novell Client 4.83
Post SP 2 Update "E"? If using Intel AA, uninstall it then reboot.
