I'm on the road now, and left him with, practically, the same response. He didn't have the system disks that came with it (2004 toshiba laptop). I thought there was something on board like the "system check" (OS?), which compared the working files to the installation ones and replaced anything questionable.. thanks

I'm not a Windows guru or, fan, nor even user, however have been asked by a friend to debug his winXP problem. When logging on, he gets a non fatal error, and can bypass it, without a problem. It has to do with the system tray and there's a missing file in the directory c:\windows\system32\dllcache\(forgotname.dll) - which is functional in and effects a file in system32\wbem\fram?????.dll (don't ask how I traced all this down and forgot half of it already )It sounds like you don't have the patience to follow through with fixing this problem so either let him live with it or find someone else to help him. It does not seem to be a dire security threat, just an annoyance at this time. If there are one or more .dll files missing he may have to uninstall or reinstall something, but if nothing seems to be broken besides this error why even bother? You could check in the Event Viewer log to see if application errors or even system errors are being shown at the time of logging on. If you do see something that looks like a serious error you could post back.
There is a log file.... system32\wbem framework(?).log, whose last entry was, in the AM today and explained the error with something like
"Provider login 'invalid', but superceded by current login...yada,yada,yada...
Anyone ever see this before? thx
