Something is *wrong* :/

Could be almost anything:

Slow could be throttling of the CPU trying to save itself from clogged/failed
cooling.
Your HD might be failing.
You could have Malware that ALSO prevents the latest updates to those programs
you used.
Could be you doubled up on similar +Helper Tools+. 2 Firewall's, Both Google
and Yahoo toolbars (or others). Multiple +active+ anti-spy,virus programs.
Overly aggressive settings on any valid one of those programs (Use the
aggressive setting for a Manual Scan while hunting for something that got past
the filters on the first day)
Your Registry is damaged from some earlier event.

Check the cooling grills and fans.
Look in the Event Viewer logs for signs of HD Failures (found one happening
that way and did not lose a thing by doing a timely HD transplant)
Back-up your Favorites, Address book and any other documents that you don't
want to chance loosing.
Insert the XP CD and run "repair"
Don't feel comfortable doing some of these steps, hire a professional to do it
with the WRITTEN understanding, that *They will NOT reformat the HD without
making a useful backup of your files and then, only as a last resort.*
You do have restore copies/originals of all your programs and drivers?
