I've set one up here for occasional use; works fine if id is on, auto connects etc. If the id is off it won't pick it up and, of course, isn't displayed in the available networks list. Switch id back on, auto connects again.

I had a similar problem with a Windows 98se machine using a wireless manager from the card's manufacturer, Asus. The fix for me was to disable the software's roaming mode. I hope that there is an analogous fix for you.
