I have a DOS based program that I want to run in XP. Now the
problem
is not that it wont start, or run in XP. It will, I have in fact
seen
it. I formatted and installed 4 new computers with XP Pro. I
installed the DOS program onto the computer. On EVERY one of the
computers, when I open the program it gives me an error "system
cannot
open com1 requested by the application" (some say com2, etc) My
current COM port is not 1, but when I try to change it to COM1 and
open the program, the program now says "system cannot open com2
requested by the application". Does anyone have any suggestions?
I
cannot find any config file where it would be requesting any
specific
COM port, but this might be a function or error with XP.

Thank you in advance,
Scott
My experience is that COM ports and XP do not play nice with the
"command
prompt" (It's not DOS any more, it just seem like it) window (or
full screen).

I put one of those RS232 signal light boxes in the line.
I would set the port speed configuration (as it worked in W9x and
DOS).
The lights would *momentarily* indicate the port ready and then go
back to not
ready.
Even changing the (Zebra label) printer to 2400 baud (the port
default, would
not work).

I keep W98(Se) around just for these old programs.
Good luck
I had a similar problem with an old dos programme. Not having a
serial port I
got one of those usb to serial adaptors. These by default choose
their own Com port dependant upon which usb socket you use. Usually
com4 or higher, You can
however force them, in their own set up utility to be com2 if, as my
old prog did,
only understand com1 or 2.
Best Mike.
setups, to use eg. com 2

You really didn't need to do so. :)

The little program allowio can be used from a batch file to give your
program temporary full access to common DOS i/O ports under NT/2000/XP,
etc. Very handy to have. With this nifty little thing, various DOS apps
will run fine under Windows XP and be able to talk to the com ports etc.
