My computer is approximately 2 months old and now has just
recently started to slow down after 3-4 hrs of use after each
bootup. I have scanned for viruses, malware/spyware, uninstalled
unecessary programs, defragmentized the hard drive, run diskcheck
and cleared cookies and temporary files from Internet Explorer.
After a few hrs the system slows down substantially thus making
it difficult to browse the net and switch inbetween programs.

I am currently running: Windows XP SP2 (with all updates), Pentium
Core Duo 2.4ghz, 2 Gigs of Ram, Norton Internet Security.

Any thoughts?

Yes. Get rid of Norton. Seriously Norton is crap. Google the
newsgroups and you'll see a lot of others saying the same thing.

Bob

I've never used a Norton program myself but I do see that the NG
consensus is that Norton is crap.
So why do pcmag and pcworld rate them so highly? Payola?

Norton's Firewall is quite good, and Norton's Anti Virus usually wins
top honors in any test. The problem with NAV is bloat. Over the last
few years, NAV has demanded more and more resources and today you can
detect a definite slow-down with NAV. The Norton Internet Security
package bundles in even more bloat. If you have a copy of Norton
Personal Firewall, use it. Anything else from Norton is best left on
the floor.

And since the poster hasn't bothered to say what processes are
soaking up the cpu, everything is pure speculation.

True. Last time I used NIS I saw it using around 35%, but he needs to look
at _his_ processes.
