Hi!
My question pertains to memory stick sizes.
I want to add memory to my Computer and
during the course of shopping for new memo-
ory I began to get differences of opinion as
to why one should not mix sizes. To this I
mean say a 1GB stick with a 512 MB stick.
Why and what can happen if one mixes 2
different sizes?
Depends on the type of memory your motherboard uses.
E.g., SDRAM must always match sizes, and must be either 2 or 4
sticks.
I'm sorry, Relic I forget to add that my
MB uses DDR Dual Channel Memory
does this help?
Your Motherboard Manual should have a section on Memory Configurations.
All the DDR2 mboards I've seen can use:
A. a Single memory stick in any slot, or
B. two sticks in two like-coloured slots, or
C. four sticks in all four slots.
You can mix sizes with dual channel configurations, but the motherboard will only map dual-channel on the lower portion that exists in both (or all 4) slots. It maps single channel operation on all the rest.
Some motherboards:
When you install 4 2GB sticks, you motherboard probably won't see all of it.
When you install 4 1GB sticks, the OS may not see all of it.
This was very informative!
