Re: ~30GB missing on my hard drive

So where on earth is the missing 30GB or more?

Dear Grahame,

Take it easy. If you really bother, how much free space you have: create a
folder, put there some large file - like 4 GB disk image. Then copy and
paste it again and again, until getting a 'no free space' message from a
system. If you are stopped after a 3-th file - then you have 4x3=12 GB. If
you manage to paste there 7-8 files more - so you may feel happy to recover
those 'lost' 30 GB. :-)

Abraham,

Thanks for the response. However I do still believe something is wrong.

As I said, I have looked at this with "Sequioa", with "Zero Assumption
Disk Space Visualizer", and with "Folder Size for Windows", and they all
seem to agree that the used space is about 30GB less that windows says
it is.

Also, this is a new machine (2 months old), and I transferred my files
from my old machine, which had a 80GB disk, including a 12GB Linux
partition. I also culled quite a few files and folders in the process,
including some CD images. So there is no way that the disc should be so
close to full.

I appreciate what you say about the reliability of the software, but
there are just too many independent pieces of evidence in agreement
about the missing space.

I know that Windows has potentially several ways of hiding files. I am
about to try stream explorer to see if there is something there. I'm not
sure whether the displayed size of a file in Explorer includes all
streams, so that may help. However, any other ideas would be appreciated.

Best wishes,

Grahame
