Re: Re" Re Updating XP without intermet" (Kad Man)

pmg <pmg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Thou gossip report. Thou lecher. Ye warned:

Thanks KM
My original post was asking if there was a way to download all XP
updates since SP1 (or SP2), so I could burn them to a CD and take them
to this poor isolated computer which currently is updated only to SP2
at its first release (from the SP2 original CD). You suggested the
slipstream method which sounds good. So I've created that CD. As I
understand, it will contain a full XP installation including SP1 and
SP2 but also up to the latest level of updates (released SP2). I
understand that this slipstream CD can now be used for repair and
also for reinstalation to SP2 level but I am still unsure if this CD
can be used to update the computer from it's current level of SP2
(first release) to a level that includes all updates since SP2. If it
can be used I'm not sure how to do that.

If the remote machine is already at SP2, then you will have to manually
download all the updates since SP2. You cannot use that cd to update the
machine but you can use it if you need to do a repair or re-installation.

Does that answer your questions?

I've created my slipstream CD as your site directed me on prior
post, complete with the integrated SP2. How do I now use that to
update the XP machine. Do I boot from that CD or just run setup
from the CD or is there some other way?
I don't recall what it was you were attempting to achieve. You'll
need to state that.

Pete
I have a XP machine at another house and it only has dial-up.
Updating windows takes forever so I've created the Slipstream SP2
Cd from your site and will use that hopefully to update the machine.
So its a bootable CD - that's good for installing XP fresh. But to
simply bring it up to date do I boot with it or run setup or what?

To "bring it up to date" you also need to put SP2 on a CD. Once
that's installed on the other machine you keep the slipstreamed cd
in case it's needed for a repair install etc. You will need the
slipstreamed cd if you go to SP2 because you can't use the original
cd if your installation is at a higher service pack level than
what's on the original cd.
