My first need is for plain backup. It's most convenient to have the
folders in alphabetical order, much as they appear when displaying
them in Windows Explorer. They're easier to find when you need to
restore.
Been my experience that the files and folders DO NOT burn in the order shown
in Roxio or Nero. It may not be their fault, either. (I had a dumb MP3 player
that used only Natural file order for storage, I loaded a Audio book RIP.
Surprise, the book chapters were randomized even with sorted file lists in
Roxio and Nero))
Windows really uses 8.3 file names and shows you the *long name*.
Change the *long name* does not change the underlying 8.3 name.
to make matters worse, 8.3 names are assigned in order added.

Open a command prompt in the desired folder:
Type Dir /X

Example: trimmed from C:/Windows/system32/
10/08/2003 10:11 65,536 IALMCO~1.DLL iAlmCoIn_v3691.dll
02/10/2004 12:10 61,440 IALMCO~2.DLL iAlmCoIn_v3762.dll
01/23/2005 10:55 61,440 IALMCO~3.DLL iAlmCoIn_v4020.dll
10/19/2005 09:59 61,440 IALMCO~4.DLL iAlmCoIn_v4342.dll

It just so happens these 4 files were added in the date shown order, so the
~number is sequential in the desired order. In other cases, this does not
happen (MP3 rips where the file name may be the album-artist-trackno).
Directory (as DISPLAYED) can be sorted, but the underlying files are in
"natural order", which is derived from many activities at creation time.

Then, there's music and book files. I'd like to be able to back up
the albums in alphabetical order, and of course the files in
alphabetical order since the first two or three characters of a
filename is usually a track number.
LOL, once 8.3 naming gets out of order, it is very hard to set it right again.
5 or less, Char file names are needed.

There's a freeware program named "Burn To The Brim" which backs up
folders and files, but the main focus is on filling up the CDs or DVDs
completely as possible, necessitating their putting in files out of
alphabetical order. That's not my goal. Media is cheap enough now
that I can write my files in alphabetical order so they're easier to
find.

Does anyone know of a program that will give me the ability to fill up
media in file-alphabetical-order within folder-alphabetical-order?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
