can't delete desktop icons

Hi - I had an email with an attachment without an extension (trusted
source - the attachment was supposed to be a forwarded email message with
photo attachments). I saved the file to my desktop. I went to put it in
the recycle bin, but I'm getting the error "Cannot read file. Cannot read
from the source file or disk". Same error message if I try to change the
filename or add an extension. It shows as 0 bytes.

I tried running the desktop cleanup utility, but the icons didn't appear in
the list to "clean up". This is very frustrating!

Can anyone give me some ideas on how to remove these desktop icons?

Thanks, Marita
