slow printing to network printer

This probably is an old problem....

I have slow printing to a network printer on XP. Takes forever to spool,
whereas if I print to a printer on a local computer on the network is goes
lightning fast.

I had found a workaround on the Net where I could print directly to the
network printer, and that worked fine, until...

Now I have a new Dell Optiplex GX520. I can't see to print directly to any
printer anymore, whether I or not I create a local port. If I try to print
to a local port, then it appear to print quickly, but want will happen is
that it will spool only a limited amount of data to the spooler, then it'll
stop, then after about a minute give me the message "Job could not print"
message.

Has anyone ever come across this? HELP!
