.wab~ is on the working copy while the Address Book is in-use. The
directory should have both the .wab and the .wab~ files.


Nope, only the identity file *Address book file* and *phrogee.wab~* files.

I've got the idea now, but I still wonder why no .wab file. Everything is
working fine with no problems though.
