We were thinking of setting up a network so that we could share
printers, but I was wondering if the multiple operating systems,
particularly on my wife's computer, would make it more trouble than it's
worth. I know I can buy a printer switch that would allow us to use the
same printer on my wife's computer and my computer for very little. The
printer I use can be used as a network server by connecting it to the
router (we already have a router to share a DSL connection), but if it's
going to be a big hassle dealing with the multiple versions of Windows
I'd rather just buy the switch and run another wire. I know that
Windows 2000 Advanced Server doesn't include some of the elements that
are included with the more traditional operating systems, and you have
to download them from Microsoft's site. Changing my wife's version of
windows isn't an option, she needs it for her work.
I run in a mixed up mess of a home Network.
W95a, W95c, W98se, Xp pro, W2k Pro and Netware (IPX) server which
supports DOS workstation files and printing. HP Jet Direct 3 port

If you file share, I would recommend using the Server OS or the
highest OS (XP pro) for stability
