First of all let me start by saying that I have used MANY OS's from the days
of the TRS-80 model 1 on. I do like the Mac and have my own Linux server as
well as an XP system and have some experience in C++, etc. so, I'm not just
a casual, mindless computer user that simply wants the computer to do it all
right out of the box. I have had many negative things to say about Windows
in the past and still do today.
However, we live in a society that is, among other things, very
opportunistic, short sighted, capitalistic (one of the most money driven in
the world) and lazy (we want SOO much done FOR us and are far less willing
to do it our selfs than most of the rest of the world).
Having said that, lets look at some finer points of your comments.
The price - Microsoft can ask it because people are willing to pay it!
Why Windows and not the others? Microsoft has spent a lot more money than
the others advertising and promoting the greatness of there product*?* and
is VERY good at making the general public THINK that they (Microsoft) are
the ones that invented or perfected the newest, latest, greatest technology
while also being very good at hiding the fact that they were actually not
the creator of said advances. They are the ultimate example of what you get
if you have the perfect combination of (1) an awesome legal team (2) willing
to take great risks (3) take a little known product or technology and tought
it as your own new cutting edge technology (4) use your market force and
legal team to force smaller companies to sell out to you or be forced out of
business and (5) add in a blend of something you actually honed (not made
from scratch but, honed) to actually be a fine product (Office*?*) and play
down the security issues.
Also, this is one of the most MAJOR factors why they are so big, Microsoft
has done a LOT of research trying to figure out what people expect to be
able to do with the computer out of the box. Most people want to plug it in
and start surfing the web, write a letter or book, look at the pictures they
took with there digital camera, etc.. They don't want to have to worry about
what IRQ the printer uses or what fdisk is or even what it does. They want
their computers to be productive NOW if not yesterday with little to no
knowledge of how the computer works. That's the general public. Linux, Unix,
BSD, etc. are not THAT easy to use. Mac may be but, Apple lacks the black
heart personality to step on and sadistically kill and devour anyone who
apposes then - Microsoft is BORG - with a pretty face.
The general public is stupid and lazy. They claim they want the best but are
willing to pay to have someone else do all the hard work for them. Thus,
Microsofts plan of attack is usability out of the box. People see that and
buy it without looking at the fact that you can get a fine product from, for
example, SUSE Linux or even Mac. They hear 1 out of 100 people say that
Linux is "hard" to use and immediately discount it as a viable option. They
look at Mac and think they know more people using Windows than Mac so
Windows is better because more people are using it. It's like people who are
part of a sect, the more you are down on their decision the more entrenched
they will become. They don't consider the fact that Windows has more bloat
in it then a week old dead rotting pig or that it has more security holes in
it then swiss cheese or that it allows less tweeking and customization then
anything else out there. They are used to believing the hype and Microsoft
is better then anyone else at that. They see what Microsoft tells them and
don't look further down the road to see the fact that they need to be more
aware of viruses, hack attacks, unrecoverable crashes, etc. Like I said they
are stupid and short sighted.
It may pain us who know better that we are forced to use Microsoft but they
have in some ways helped the computer industry as a whole.
(1) The initial out of the box ease of use is far better now then it has
ever been and the sheer power of Microsoft is a major driving force behind
that, eventhough the overall quality of the product is still an issue
(typical of Microsoft). High five to Apple for taking on XEROX for the PARK
technology but, Microsoft marketed better.
(2) Microsoft, due in part to its BORG tactics, has brought to the limelight
many technologies faster then if left to their own devices.
(3) Microsoft is now being tought as an example of how you can become HUGE
in business if you are willing to be a cut throught - F### everyone around
you to get to the top kind of business. Sheer capitalism in its purest form.
Good or bad Microsoft is going to be here for quite a while and I for one
don't think getting an ulcer over it is worth it.
If you want to fight Microsoft then do it in a way that will actually do
some good - educate the people - don't waste our time in a sect like this
newsgroup.

Vista will come in many flavors, but the full version is scheduled to
cost around $300 per computer. Apple sells a family license for its
full version that covers up to 5 computers for a total cost of only
$199. Linux is free.
Most of the time, I don't even see Windows, because I'm using some
application such as firefox, eudora, excel and so on. Since an
operating system spends most of its time supporting the applications
that the user is running, I can't understand why Microsoft is charging
so much money.
Although I have a Linux server which I use for storing all my user
data (Windows security being what it is), I still HAVE TO use Windows
for some applications. Of course, I will not upgrade my 3 computers
from Windows XP for as long as I can; but I fear that eventually, I
will be FORCED to upgrade.
I guess this is the power of the monopoly. In the bad old days, there
was only one phone company and everyone had to pay lots of money if
they wanted to use the phone; especially if you wanted to talk to
someone in another state. Along came the breakup of that monopoly;
then came cell phones, and now voice over IP (such as Vonage). You
can now make an unlimited number of calls both local and long distance
for only $25 a month!
Clearly, the government has failed to protect the consumer in the
realm of computer software.
Thank you for your comments. I found it interesting.
