I'm installing an OEM copy of XP pro and during the installation
(approx 39 min remaining), it simply freezes up and does
nothing. I try rebooting, then setup picks up where it left
off, but it freezes again and never gets past the 39 min.
remaining point. Any suggestions?

brand new build

1) keep it in the group

2) what are the system specs

2.8GHz Pentium D, 2x1GB DDR2 RAM, 2x160GB 3GB/s SATA, Nvidia
Geforce 7800GTX, INtel 945 chipset. I was using the quick set up
before when choosing to install windows on a particular
partition, now tried the regular set up and it now keeps
rebooting over and over again in an endless loop!

strip down to 1 stick of ram and video card - run memtest86 on each
stick individually to see if they pass. if they do, then try to
install with one stick of ram and 1 hd.

btw, what power supply are you using? a cheapy that came with the
case or another one purchased separately?

also, you did plug in the extra power connector for the mobo and
video cards, right?

how do i run memtest86? in dos mode? I'm using the 375 watt pws
that came with the case (yes the cheapy). It's a Dell XPS 400
case. can you recommend a good power supply that will run the
7800GTX card?

look up memtest86 on the net - it runs as a <cough> linux ap and
will load from a floppy or bootable cd.

to recomend a power supply is like recomending a wine, beer, or
something of choice. but, antec is decent for their price range,
seasonic, certain enermax units, and if you like to gamble
thermaltake makes a turd or 2 that will do the trick too. if money
is no object, then there is always pc power and cooling. with that
setup i would look at nothing less than 525 watts. it should give
you enough cushion not to even break a sweat under load.

also don't bother with the atx 20-24 pin converters, they are a
gamble at best. plus be sure and check to see if the power supply
will match up to the bolt pattern on the dell case. if not pc power
and cooling does make dell replacements.

good luck

so do you think getting a bigger power supply will cure the "reboot
looping" problem i'm having? Is it because it will not power my video
card sufficently? Yes the extra power connector (4-pin i think?) for
the mobo and video card are plugged in correctly.

line for line this is the spec of the stock xps400

1)post the service tag number from the chassis
2)tell what exactly what you have done
3)if not, piss off
