Try using the System File Checker (SFC) that is still in XP to check
for corrupt system files:
There is info on how to use it here:

I've been at my friend's PC...
and when i open Explorer, normally there should be folder tree on the left,
such as my computer, C drive, CD ROM's, network... and selected contents on
right side. BUT, there's nothing on the left side plain nothing! Just empty
window. Even if i click on Folders icon-nothing. But, another strange
thing - when i click on Serach, it normally opens with all options. But when
i click it again to close - it wont' close---not matter if i click on search
or folders, there's always search option shown. But when i close and re-open
explorer, it's empty left side again...
any clues about what to do except that standard c:\format?
