windows installer message

I am getting the following message at desktop:-

"Error 1706 - No valid source could be found for product Update
Manager. The Windows Installer cannot continue." I can still use my
system, but how do I fix this? Microsoft knowledge base doesn't seem
to have it listed. I am using XP Home SP2.
