I wonder---if i have set time to standby, say, 20 minutes and / or
time to hibernate to xxyy....when i prepare, say, nero and hit
BURN and leave PC to burn, while set burn speed to low so that
whole process would take more than 20 minutes...will PC enter
standby mode? Does windows actually countdown minutes to
standby/hibernate when Nero is working (or any other
program in that matter) ? i know that screensaver DOES turn on
even if Nero is
burning...but this isn't that deadly--- :-)=
Thanks

The timer is from the last key-stroke or mouse wiggle.
hm...that's what i thought..but i've read somewhere that system idle
processes, which supposely start around 30 minutes afer last strike
resets counter (this should be corrected with some win update). Also
i have new mobo a couple of days and i have set PC to go into
standby after 25
mins, but it won't go. It shuts down monitor and that's it... ? I
have BIOS
set to S3 power mode and ACPI enabled...
second thing...i installed Win X64 on second partition (just for
fun, i guess) and after two days i can say that thing rocks! It's
pretty
damn fast, so i wonder, (since you have surely more experience with
this) is
there any catch or down side (besides that i must find 64 bit
drivers for all my stuff) ?
You would think it was the way forward but many seem to be giving it
a miss.
One would hope the driver issue will be sorted but maybe people will
concentrate on vista.
Everything seems a bit confused at the moment, hopefully it wont
take too long for things to settle back down and all the rubbish get
left by the wayside, the problem is trying to throw your cash in one
direction or another whilst taking minimal risk. I'm not going to
rush into anything just
yet, maybe another 6 months and I'll be confident enough to take a
plunge. If you keep 64bit on your spare partition and you eventually
manage
to get all the drivers you need then you'll be doing pretty well.
i guess you're right... It's just...i totally re-assembled my PC by
braking my RAID1 so i have more space...i will rebuild RAID (call it
paranoia, but i've had two HDD failures in 6 months once and i just don't
trust HDD
anymore), but with SATA drives, which will come as i'll get some
money :-(( but for now, i have x64 like you suggest, more or less for
curiosity.
I'd install vista beta, but....i'm hesitating about it...
so far my worst thing regarding drivers is lack of logitech ones,
since i have some years old cordless optical trackman (trackball) and
there
are no drivers for it yet, while native drivers doesn't "pull" my
ball into odd direction...like when i push it up, it really moves
pointer at 45 degrees..... basically it happens with normal XP drivers
also until i
install logitech drivers. It's odd, really and i wonder why is
happening...
but i must admit that these x64 are fast... :-)

For my own part, I have never had a thought which I could not set
down in words with even more distinctness than that with which I
conceived
it. There is, however, a class of fancies of exquisite delicacy which
are not thoughts, and to which as yet I have found it absolutely
impossible to adapt to language. These fancies arise in the soul,
alas how rarely. Only at epochs of most intense tranquillity, when
the bodily and mental health are in perfection. And at those weird
points
of time, where the confines of the waking world blend with the world
of dreams. And so I captured this fancy, where all that we see, or
seem, is but a dream within a dream.

I once spent a complete fucking fortune in time, effort and money trying
to
get something to work (a driver issue).
Ultimately I lost my temper and smashed it to smitherines, the cost of a
replacement was far less than I had already spent trying to get the
original
working.
aha...that was one of my thoughts. I'll look around for any new trackball
models and decide...
