My computer keeps shutting down

I've had this problem since I got it. It was specially built, to the
tune of a *very* pretty penny, and has always done this, but it's
gotten much worse. Unfortunately, the guy who built it has gone out of
business. I guess computers just got too complex for him to keep up
with.
This is not due to overheating or firewall conflicts. It shuts down
when I play a graphics-heavy game, run a graphics program such as
PhotoShop, bring up pictures to look at from Windows Explorer, or try
to move graphics files to different folders.
Windows XP, service pack 2, pentium 4 - 2.8 GHz, 1 Gig RAM.
After disabling automatic restart, I now get the following message on a
blue screen:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer
STOP ox0000008E (oxC00000005, oxBF8011D3, oxF7A8DA48, ox00000000)
win32k.sys - address base at BF800000, datestamp 43446a58
I hope someone can advise me on this. I'm no whiz.
