I only know how you can rid those red lines cos I just had same after
changing out the graphics card in my Dell notebook.
You need to reset the desktop icons by changing them to another size and
then changing them back. To do this,
Right click your lower Task Bar, select Properties. Select Start Menu tab
then Customize. Under the general tab change the icon size from whatever is
your default to the other. Select OK. Now change it back to your default and
select OK again.
Now on to your frozen bit, I must say this is so similar to my card problem,
I left the comp running an antivirus scan and when I returned home in the
evening it had frozen..............from then on in any restart would not
correct a very pixelated screen. I could just make the windoz icons but
considered either the monitor or GC had gone TU............by connecting a
second monitor I eliminated the monitor so it was the GC. Dell came out the
following day and fitted a new card and hey presto back to norm apart from
having to do the above fix.

Here's the problem. I was gone for the weekend this weekend and I left my
computer on like always. Well I came back and it's frozen. So I manually
restarted it and when it came back up it seemed to be ok. But then I
started playing a couple of flash games and found that it would crash into
640 x 480 with 16 colors and say that my video card driver has failed.
At first I didn't think any thing of this so I just decided that I would
check to see if there was a new video card driver out there for me. There
was and I loaded it. When my system tried to come back up from a restart,
it just would keep restarting after it says Windows XP. So I booted into
safe mode and rolled back the driver. This got my system back up and
running but I still suffer from occasional video card driver failers.
Another little thing that I have noticed that if you go into Outlook all
the icons on the left for like inbox outbox, etc all have 3 little pink
lines on top of them and 3 little pink lines on the bottom of them. I
don't care about this but this showed up after the video card driver
issues.
I have tried to uninstall the card completely and then reinstall it using
my original driver (the card is about 6 months old). This fixed the issue
for about 2 hours and then it came back.
Now it's been about a year since I have reloaded my OS and cleaned
everything so I know I could do that but I run a pretty tight ship when it
comes to my computer. I only have my antivirus and Skype running in the
system tray. I don't goto porn sites that put all the spyware and garbage
on your computer. I also do not download with peer to peer software. I
mainly use this computer for gaming and I haven't been gaming online
(besides a flash game here and there) for months.
I have done a virus update/scan and it didn't come back with any thing. I
also ran Ad-aware SE, with all updates, and it didn't come back with any
thing. I have a personal firewall on top of the windows firewall so I'm
pretty sure that it wouldn't of been a hack or any thing like that.
Does anybody out there have any idea what could be causeing this? I really
don't want to do a clean install just to see if my video card has actually
failed or not. I'm still playing Yuri's Revenge, Halo, and Battle Field 2
which seem to run just fine. It seems to be crashing randomly and I would
think that if the video card was actually screwed that it would bomb out
as soon as I start BF2 since it requires so much to play.
My system specs:
Windows XP Pro SP2
AMD motherboard
AMD 2800+ CPU
1 gig RAM
ATI Radeon x700 video card
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
Below you will find the event that was logged when this error comes up.
As you can see nothing in the suggested articles are related to what is
going on here. I almost want to say that since it was frozen and I had to
do a hard reboot that I may have screwed up something in my OS that is
communicating with the driver itself but I would think that I would have
problems doing other things as well, like playing DVDs and such.
