I do some repair and clean-up for customers and friends of friends. Often,
but not always, I have to format and reinstall the OS. At
this point, I have to track down the owner's key and said owner is
not available or can't find the key in a timely manor so I'm at a
standstill. Often the box is so bad I can't extract the old key or I
forget.
Is there a way I can do the install using a "temporary" key to finish
the install then when the owner first starts-up, he is FORCED to
enter his registered key and the "temporary" key goes away and can't
be used? This way I could have the OS and all apps. installed and
functional and the owner is registered and legal. I know there are a
bunch of key changers out there and I could start one on "start up"
but I want to make sure the owner can't blow by it or reuse the
"temporary" key.
If there are no major hardware changes, it shouldn't be a problem but
what if there are big changes and Windows would normally want to
re-register? Can I make it go through the registration process?
I do try to get all the original disks and keys but we all know how
that goes.
Why not read the Key from the existing installation before formatting?
