Hi Frank, thanks for your patience!
It seems my version of XP includes service pack 2
However, I seem to remember that Win98/Millenium had a repair option when
you felt you needed to re-install Windows when things went wrong, but XP
doesn't on first appearence provide this option. After backing up my whole
system I went for broke and decided to re-install XP. It comes with an
option to upgrade to XP, which I assumed was for upgrading from an earlier
windows. I chose this option and about 20 mins later my system was up and
running again with no apparent problems thankfully and no loss of my
previous settings!
I guess I re-installed Service Pack 2 the long way around!
The truth is, I don't have a clue how to re-install SP2 on its own :(
But thanks for your help, it was appreciated :)

Thanks, but do I need to install Service Pack 2 again????
Cheers, Jeff
Yes, you'll have to reinstall Service Pak 2 again after you have, for
example, installed new software or drivers. Installing new software or
drivers will overwrite excisting Service Pak 2 files, so you'll need to
reinstall Service Pak 2 to assure correct functioning of the OS.
