HELP PLEASE?

Forgive me asking what will probably be obvious to experienced people, but I
am really fed up with trying to establish a simple network........

My pc is on XP HOME and my wife's is XP PRO

I have tried wireless router and modem to establish a network...... not a
chance!

I have tried cross over cable and run the network wizard....... not a
chance!

I have a new belkin setup to try and get sorted, netgear stuff kept dropping
connection and was grief........ so now I am trying a simple basic network
and I am damned if I can get it to work.

A friend reckons having XP and XP HOME on different machines could be the
problem ??

Can someone please help me try and sort out this damned thing??

ultimately I would like to be able to setup both PCs on a network and
sharing of printer and files and internet......

We are moving to Spain in a while and I really want things sorted and my
knowledge improved!!

Step by step help would be brilliant........
