Does WinXP boot all the way and work properly?
If so, you don't have to do anything except install some applications.
Internet Explorer is installed automatically and there is a picture viewer
and Windows Media Player installed.
If you want to back up the system or files read the info on this page:

You can also use CD or DVD burning software to burn copies of files you want
saved to recordable CD/DVDs.
Or you can buy a large flash drive and save them to it.
